Marikina didn't start as Marikina all at once. Just like all things, Marikina started as a small city and as time flew by, Marikina started to rise up to a level almost the same to Manila and sometimes, higher than any other cities in the National Capital Region.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF MARIKINA CITY By Eunice Topacio

The area where Marikina now stands was administered by the Jesuits during the Spanish Period when they came in the year 1630. They established a settlement at once and named it Jesus dela Peña which is now a famous church in the present day city. The area was later called Mariquina and in 1787, the Mariquina was declared a pueblo  (town) under the Spanish colonial government. Later, when the Philippine Revolution broke out, Mariquina became the capital of the province of Manila from 1898 to 1899.

Shortly after the United States took possession of the Philippines, Marikina officially got their precent day name and the province of Rizal was created on June 11, 1901 by virtue of Act No. 137 by the First Philippine Commission which during the time was acting as the unicameral legislative body in the island of Luzon. Marikina, along with many other towns around Manila were incorporated into this new province of Manila.

On November 7, 1975, by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 824, the twelve western towns of Rizal, including Marikina, were made a part of the new Metropolitan Manila Area. On December 8, 1996, the municipality of Marikina became a chartered city by virtue of Republic Act No. 8223.

By the time Marikina have reached the 20th century, this city rosed up to become a town where shoemakers owe crafty hands and shoes became the center of Marikina Industry.
